Fort Sesfontein Lodge & Safaris

Fort Sesfontein Lodge lies in the centre of Sesfontein in the old German fort which has been abandoned in 1914. Only the ruins and cemetery were left to witness the former presence of troops in Sesfontein. The German South-West African government built Fort Sesfontein in the early 1896, as a checkpoint for checking cattle disease, arms smuggling and illegal hunting. It has been restored as a lodge for tourists on individual holiday. Guests can explore an ephemeral river bed, recently discovered rock engravings and visit the nomadic Himba tribe. The lodge was built out of clay walls, stone floors and wooden lining, with modern facilities for a comfortable and tranquil stay. We use solar power for hot water and electricity. Fort Sesfontein features a refurbished restaurant with integrated lounge and bar, and a large swimming pool.

Accommodation

Our accommodation features mosquito nets over four-poster beds, ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, wardrobe and small lounge. Some of the units have bathtubs and air-conditioning. We also have a family room with a similar setting. Fort Sesfontein offers a pleasant atmosphere with hot dry days and cool nights. Guests can enjoy a relaxing evening under the Southern Cross and an amazing star-studded sky.

Activities

Our activities include the Hoanib Himba village excursions, rock engravings and hiking trails. All tours are organised with 4×4 vehicles and lunch bags with beverages included. Guests can see antelopes, ostriches and zebras in the picturesque savannah. On the Himba tour, you will be able to learn more about their history and their way of life. We have beautiful landscapes and scenery to offer for photographers, you can become your own archaeological adventurer. The rock engravings of Sosos were recently discovered in a canyon with works of African fauna and flora. Guests can also see the Welwitschia mirabilis plant, which is believed to be over 1,000 years old.
