Hot Air Ballooning with Namib Sky Balloon Safaris | Sossusvlei

Namib Sky Balloon Safaris offer hot air ballooning safaris over Sossusvlei and the Namib Desert in Namibia. Experience the true beauty and appreciate just how truly magnificent the Namib Sand Sea’s surreal terrain is as you soar from high above. Despite the extreme and harsh conditions, the Namib Desert is full of splendour. A Sossusvlei hot air balloon safari is quite possibly the best way to observe the oldest desert in the world fully. Namib Sky Balloon Safaris have been offering Namib balloon safaris over the Namib Desert and Sossusvlei area for more than 25 years. Many of the desert dunes are over 200 meters high. Some of them are over 300 meters high.

A hot air balloon safari over Sossusvlei is one of the most popular activities in Namibia. If you are on honeymoon in Namibia, we recommend taking a hot air balloon safari with us. The romance you will feel as you float over the surrounding scenery is almost tangible. The view and surroundings will take your breath away. It’s as if the desert comes to life. Namib Sky Balloon Safaris will ensure that this is the highlight of your honeymoon in Namibia.

Enjoy the breeze from atop as you witness endless vistas of shadows and lights, the oceans of sand and mountains, and the animals grazing in the savanna. After the Sossusvlei balloon safari, we have an “Out Of Africa” style Champagne breakfast set up in the middle of nowhere.

Ballooning is very safe. Namib Sky Balloon Safaris has a 100% safety record, we have already flown over 60 000 guests. Our pilots are highly qualified and have commercial licenses. We will gladly arrange a pick-up from your Sossusvlei accommodation if you require. You will arrive back at your lodge between 10 am-11 am, which gives you enough time to reach your next destination if you plan to travel to Swakopmund or Windhoek.

The pilots can quite accurately control the balloon’s altitude by adding or reducing the amount of heat from the balloon burner. The balloon will always go at the same speed and direction as the wind. Due to a hot air balloon’s motionless movement, it is considered more comfortable than any other type of flying. It is unlikely that you will experience any dizziness and you shouldn’t be nervous about hot air ballooning.

Is ballooning safe?

Namib Sky Balloon Safaris have been flying hot air balloons in Namibia for over 25 years. We have had more than 60000 passengers with a 100% safety record. Hot air balloon flights are done only in perfect weather conditions. Your safety is of the highest priority, and our pilots are all highly qualified and holders of commercial pilot licenses.

What clothing should be worn?

Dress according to the season. Bring a warm top/jacket with, and hat-no high heels. You will be allowed to bring your camera, but nothing else (bags) as the balloon is sensitive to weight.

Do you fly all year round?

Sossusvlei Balloon Safaris are done every morning at sunrise – weather permitting. The area experiences mostly ideal conditions for hot air ballooning so we have a very low cancellation rate. In the unlikely event that the weather does not allow us to fly then you will be fully refunded or booked for your balloon flight the following day if convenient. Due to the heat that the desert can experience, we are closed from the 15th January until 15th February.

Are children allowed to fly?

Children that are over 120 cm and can see over the basket will thoroughly enjoy their balloon ride. Smaller children will join the ground crew and follow the balloon and join their parents at the landing site for breakfast.
