Hakos Guest Farm – Stargazing
Stargazing at the Gamsberg Mountain
What makes the stars so prominent in the Namibia night sky? The answer to that is, due to the very low air pollution and virtually non-existing light pollution Namibia offers – we have ideal conditions to explore the southern night sky. With Gamsberg, being Namibia’s largest table mountain, it’s one of the three top venues for stargazing throughout the southern hemisphere. If you have never seen the Southern Cross before and have an interest in astronomy we suggest including Hakos in your safari to Namibia.
It is a pleasure for us to inform you about the Hakos Cosmos so that you will leave us with wonder in your hearts! The best observation times start one hour after sunset after the astronomical dusk. Similarly the best times commence 4 days after full moon until 4 days after new moon for the evening sky. Guests with and without experience will witness the difference between the northern and southern night sky – in the deep black sky, you can see how the Milky Way shines and casts shadows. Many other star signs, nebulas and galaxies can be seen.
We offer the Stargazing Tour, Gamsberg Tours, Quiver Tree Forest and shady camping. A walking trail representing our solar system has been laid out to scale for you to discover it’s formidable size. Hakos Guest Farm owns 2 proper astronomical observatories with a roll-off roof that houses mirror and lens telescopes on a heavy mount with automatic tracking; guests can also bring their own stargazing equipment. For our guests convenience we offer comfortable accommodation and camping.
