Hoada Campsite & Tented Camp: Camping Among the Boulders Near Kamanjab

Hoada Campsite & Tented Camp sits roughly 75 km west of Kamanjab in Damaraland, tucked among large grey granite boulders and mopane trees. It’s the sister campsite of Grootberg Lodge, offering a more rustic, self-catering way to experience the same area.

What Makes Hoada Campsite & Tented Camp Different

Hoada’s splash pool, built directly into the boulders with wooden decks around it, is a distinctive feature for a self-catering campsite, giving guests somewhere to cool off between activities without leaving the property. Its spacious sites and permanent tented units suit both self-drivers with their own gear and travellers wanting a lighter-packing option. The campsite is entirely owned by the community of the ≠Khoadi //Hôas Conservancy and supported by the EU.

Accommodation at Hoada Campsite & Tented Camp

Hoada’s spacious campsites each sleep up to eight guests, with room for ground tents or rooftop tents. Group camping is available for up to 14 guests, with separate bathrooms. For a little more comfort, permanent tented units sleep two, with beds and bedding, bedside tables and private ablutions. Each campsite has its own kitchen area, BBQ facilities, a flush toilet and an open-air shower. The BBQ fire also heats the shower water, so a lit braai means a hot shower. Firewood, braai packs, cutlery and crockery can be bought or rented at reception. Staff can help with camp setup.

Please note that there is no shop or restaurant at Hoada. There is no Wi-Fi, and cell reception is very limited.

We stayed for one night at campsite #1. Great outdoor shower and wonderful camping spot. When we arrived we were greeted by really friendly staff who introduced us to the site. The fire for the hot water was already burning 👍🏽 Just wonderful and a great location😎😊

Our stay was welcoming and relaxing. We enjoyed our time by the pool and around the fire under the night sky. We stayed in the tents and found the beds to be pretty stiff and only one blanket was provided. It got pretty cold in the evenings. We loved the bathroom space but was a little turned off by the large amounts of mice poop. Didn’t bother us to much knowing this was more on the “rustic” side. We enjoyed the garlic bread they had to offer and we had a group of women from a nearby village sing to us around our fire. Overall we did enjoy our stay!

Living in a real-life "Flintstone Land," this was our favorite campsite in Namibia. It offers perfect privacy without feeling isolated, featuring private showers and toilets beautifully built right into the rocks. The hot water system runs on a traditional wood-fired "donkey boiler," and a lovely staff member came early in the morning to light it up so we’d have hot water the moment we woke up. Speaking of the staff, they were incredibly helpful, giving us unique, insider tips for our visit to Etosha. The bar and pool area, nestled into the boulders, are stunning—especially at sunset. We absolutely loved the team and the whole vibe of this place!

Lovely campsite, strongly recommend. Gorgeous area and scenery, each camping stand is private and has flush toilets, hot showers, running water and a sink, as well as shade. Staff is very friendly and helpful, and the elevated bar offers a lovely view over the sunset for sundowners. The pool is more for a dip than a swim, as it’s quite small - but in summer must be nice. Overall 10/10 place.

Leading a large family convoy of 6 vehicles and 17 PAX it was important to find a campsite that could manage and cater for the entire group. Hoada managed with ease and we all had a very enjoyable and sociable stay. The pool up in the rocks, the bar and sunset viewing point were well utilised and appreciated and made the stay even more memorable. The only very minor issue I could point to was the low water pressure in the showers. This however did not effect or impact our stay and we had a most enjoyable stay. Would love to do it again.

Great campsite mainly because of the setting. The whole site is nestled in a picturesque boulderfield with a great view from the pool, which is also set in natural stones. The campground is quite big so it still feels private. As a climber I couldn't resist climbing some of the boulders. While there isn't anything developed there is quite some potential for moderate lines if someone motivated would spend some time with a few crashpads and a hammer (lots of loose flakes) here.
