Ongongo Waterfall Campsite: Swimming at a Natural Spring in Kaokoland

Ongongo Waterfall Campsite sits in a rocky gorge near Warmquelle in Kaokoland, built around a crystal-clear, spring-fed waterfall and natural pool. It’s a popular, off-the-grid stop for self-drive travellers heading towards Epupa Falls or exploring the wider Kaokoland region.

What Makes Ongongo Waterfall Campsite Different

“Ongongo” means “magical” in Herero, and the name fits. The natural pool’s water is often pleasantly warm, making it genuinely enjoyable for swimming and relaxing after a long day of driving, a rare comfort in this remote corner of Namibia. The setting, tucked into a rocky gorge, adds a real sense of discovery that’s kept Ongongo’s reputation as one of the country’s hidden gems.

Accommodation at Ongongo Waterfall Campsite

The campsite has 9 private sites, each accommodating up to 2 vehicles and 8 people, with its own toilet and shower, hot water from a wood-fired donkey boiler, and a shaded area for cooking and relaxing. There’s no Wi-Fi and no laundry facilities, in keeping with the remote, self-catering nature of the stay.

Location & Getting There

Access is part of the experience. High-clearance 2×4 vehicles such as bakkies or SUVs can reach the upper parking area, but sedans aren’t suitable, and the final descent into the gorge itself is 4×4 only. Travellers in a 2×4 can park at the top and carry equipment down, though a rented 4×4 is strongly recommended for a more comfortable visit. The nearest fuel stations are Sesfontein and Palmwag.

I can't understand the negative reviews. This is a very romantic campsite right on the river in a beautiful setting. The small waterfall and pool are perfect for swimming. Each campsite has a covered area with a fire pit, sink, electricity, and its own ablution facilities. The access road is indeed a bit bumpy, but no problem at all with a four-wheel drive vehicle. It's a little more expensive than usual. The only slightly irritating thing is the many children begging along the access road, but the campsite itself is lovely. Please note: There is no restaurant or shop on site, so bring everything you need!

N390 per person - run down ablutions where the toilet water flows onto the ground (and towards the local community?) - unfriendly welcome and the pools where green and surrounded by 10 workers - tens and tens of begging community kids next to the access road. Worst and most expensive campsite experience in Namibia.

The camp is in dire need of renovation and its only redeeming features are the waterfall and the swimming pool. Loose faucets, rattling roof tiles—everything is old and worn. The road leading there isn't great, but that's not the camp's fault. It's still manageable, though. It's a poor region, and there's a lot of begging along the roadside. The waterfall is, of course, fantastic, and our children loved swimming and splashing around there. We also felt very safe there. The maintenance worker lives in a house right on a rock above the camp and comes down when called. Animal lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. In the evenings, dogs come to visit; they are reservedly friendly, even with the children. Many frogs and toads croak by the river in the evenings and are easy to spot. There's also no shortage of all sorts of insects, etc.

The pitches are quite large and clean, the pool is very refreshing… the restaurant has delicious dishes on the menu. The waterfall is worth visiting.

We had a wonderful stay at the Ongong Waterfall Campsite! A small and cozy campground surrounded by stunning nature. The highlight is definitely the beautiful waterfall with its natural pool – perfect for a refreshing swim and relaxing in peaceful surroundings. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, making the stay even more enjoyable. Facilities are simple but clean, with showers and bathrooms available for everyone at the campsite. One of the best campgrounds in Namibia – highly recommended for anyone looking for a calm and authentic camping experience!

We managed to reach Ongongo Waterfall Campsite without a 4x4, and while the road looked a bit daunting, our Ford Everest handled it just fine with a little momentum. The site itself is absolutely beautiful, located right by a warm spring that’s perfect for bathing. However, the campsite could use a bit more love in its setup, and our welcome felt somewhat unfriendly. Despite this, we still felt comfortable and would love to return. The stunning scenery definitely makes it worth it!

Do not waste your time. Unfriendly staff and very bad road. Damaged our off-road caravan going down the road that cannot be called a road. After travelling for thousands of kilometres this was by far the worst road . Nothing is being maintained and locals are continuously walking in and around the campsite. Will not recommend to anybody. We were a convoy of 4 vehicles and caravans and we all left the same day.

Campsites with water and private bathrooms at a small river fed by a thermal spring. Access road is a bit rough and could be better signposted, High clearance or 4x4 required. Campsites are neat, although a bit dusty. We had number 8, which is the most private and shady site. Highlight of Ongongo is the warmish natural rock pool below the small waterfall near campsite 1. Great place to swim and relax. Interesting hike possible, starting from above the waterfall and following the gorge upstream, past the spring. Campsite is a bit pricey compared to others in Namibia.
