Etosha Omusati Lodge: Affordable Comfort Near Andersson Gate

Etosha Omusati Lodge lies 15 km south of Andersson Gate, the southern entrance to Etosha National Park, offering a relaxed, budget-friendly base for exploring the park’s Okaukuejo area. It’s a comfortable choice for self-drive travellers, families, campers and guided tour groups alike.

What Makes Etosha Omusati Lodge Different

Etosha Omusati Lodge takes its name from the mopane trees that surround it, known as omusati in Oshiwambo. Just 15 km from Andersson Gate, it’s closer to the southern edge of Etosha than many lodges in the area, and it offers bush chalets, bungalows, a family chalet and private campsites all on one property. At the end of the day, guests can climb the lodge’s canopy tower to watch the sun set over the mopane woodland.

Accommodation at Etosha Omusati Lodge

Etosha Omusati Lodge has 20 twin bush chalets and 10 twin bungalows, all with en-suite showers, air conditioning, private patios, in-room safes, coffee stations and complimentary toiletries. Extra mattresses for children can be added. Families can book the Family Bush Chalet, which has four single beds, a mezzanine that sleeps two children, and a small basin for washing bottles. It is not self-catering.

The four private campsites each take up to six people and have an electricity point, lights, shaded seating and their own braai area. Shared ablutions have flush toilets and hot showers, heated by wood-fired “donkey” boilers that staff light in the evening. Campers bring their own tents and gear and have full use of the lodge’s restaurant, bar and pool.

Location & Getting There

Etosha Omusati Lodge is 15 km from Andersson Gate, Etosha’s southern entrance, making it well placed for day trips into the park’s Okaukuejo area and its waterhole. It lies directly on the tarred C38 between Outjo and Andersson Gate, so it’s easy to reach in any vehicle. For a wider self-drive through Namibia, where many routes are gravel or sand, we recommend a rented 4×4. Alternatively, the lodge can be included as part of a guided Namibian safari.

  • Swakopmund: 487km (about 5h30min drive).
  • Khorixas: 213km (about 2 hours drive).
  • Outjo: 85.4km (about 50min drive).
  • Windhoek: 401km (4 hours drive).

Activities & Experiences

  • Etosha Omusati Lodge runs half-day and full-day guided game drives into Etosha with experienced local guides, departing morning or afternoon. The price includes the park entrance fee, drinks, and a breakfast or lunch pack depending on the length of the drive.
  • Guests can self-drive into the park independently. See our Etosha game viewing tips for making the most of either approach.
  • Back at the lodge, climb the canopy tower for sunset views, unwind on the sundowner deck, or take a walk through the surrounding mopane woodland.

We've stayed in several lodges in Namibia before. The rooms here were large, as was the bathroom, and everything seemed relatively new. What we didn't like were the extremely thick and firm pillows, which were very uncomfortable and caused neck pain, especially after drives in Etosha, where you get quite a bumpy ride. Despite the many pictures, we found the dining room rather austere and noisy. Based on our previous experiences, the food was rather mediocre. There were three bottles of Knorr dressing available with the salad from the buffet. That's unacceptable. A dressing can be made in five minutes; it doesn't require any magic. The rest of the food was just enough to fill you up, not something to enjoy. The rosé we ordered arrived warm. We were asked if we wanted ice, which I understood to mean ice in the wine, but they meant an ice bucket. This arrived some time later. I then took the bottle to the bar because I thought it would take a long time for the wine to get cold. My comment at the bar that the wine was too warm was met with a shrug. I asked them to put it in the freezer, which they did. When I retrieved the wine 15 minutes later, it was somewhat cooler. After another 20 minutes in the ice bucket, it was finally at a reasonably drinkable temperature. At breakfast, a stack of sliced bread was carried to the bread bin by a kitchen worker using only his bare hands. That's hardly hygienic. The bar also made a rather austere impression. It wasn't a place you'd want to linger. Overall, after five other lodges, it was rather mediocre.

We had a fantastic time at Omusati Lodge. Our bungalow was spotlessly clean, the bathroom was spacious and high-quality, and the food was delicious. The barbecue evening is highly recommended. The only reason it only gets four stars is the Wi-Fi. We had a one-time code with 300MB. You can also purchase additional data packages. If you don't, you're essentially cut off, as the local phone network doesn't work either. We had to organize and book the rest of our trip and were therefore very limited in our ability to do anything. This doesn't really do justice to the superb location and lodge. Nevertheless, a huge compliment to the team for the wonderful lodge…

We stayed in the bush chalet and enjoyed the clean space they provided. We were greeted with tasty drink upon arrival and a welcoming staff. This was our 3rd place we have stayed at during our time in Namibia. The food was not our favorite but we were grateful for the food they did provide. We did the game drive through Etosha with them and enjoyed our time. We were able to see lions, a cheetah, elephants, zebras, giraffes, rhinos, and all kinds of antelopes. While our game drive was exciting, we wish our guide was more knowledgeable about the animals and the relationships they have with the environment.

Very nice resort with a lot of potential, but it’s missing the final touch. It could easily be an amazing stay, yet right now it feels a bit soulless. The atmosphere is not what you expect from a safari lodge. Think bright TL-style lighting and more “office-like” dinners instead of a warm, romantic safari vibe, with little greenery and minimal decoration. Unfortunately, I also got food poisoning during my stay. This can happen anywhere, but the way it was handled was disappointing. On the day it happened, I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lodge, so it is very likely it came from their kitchen. Instead of taking this seriously, the response I received felt focused on avoiding responsibility. Referring to other guests not reporting issues, while there were only a handful of guests and most did not even eat the same dish, does not come across as fair or professional. An apology and some accountability would have gone a long way, but that was missing. Overall, a place with potential, but the experience did not match expectations.

Camping was completely flooded. Roads, reception, camping area and even the entrance to the rooms were under water up to my calves. Inside roads had no gravel and turned into a mud swimming pool. Access to the room was not reachable by car. Walking through deep mud with luggage was the only option. Unacceptable conditions and zero preparedness. One star is generous. The manager and the person responsible for reservations were helpless.

A beautiful, family-friendly lodge with spacious rooms. Large master bedroom and a mezzanine perfect for the kids. We loved our stay. Small swimming pool, though maintenance could be improved. Dinner is served promptly at 7 p.m., and the half-board option is pleasant.
