Best Waterholes in Etosha for Wildlife Viewing

Waterholes are central to game viewing in Etosha. Which ones to prioritise depends on where you’re staying, the season and the time of day. For the wider picture of the park’s wildlife, accommodation and travel planning, see our Etosha National Park guide.

Best Waterholes Near Okaukuejo

Okaukuejo’s own floodlit waterhole is one of Etosha’s best-known wildlife-viewing spots, especially for black rhino and elephant after dark. Nearby daytime stops, Nebrownii, Okondeka and Olifantsbad among them, are productive for plains game, with Okondeka’s open, pan-edge setting also a good bet for lion.

Best Waterholes Near Halali

Halali’s floodlit Moringa waterhole rewards patient after-dark viewing, while Goas and Rietfontein to the east and west are strong daytime stops for elephant, plains game and the occasional predator. Salvadora and Charitsaub, near the pan edge, add scenic, open-country sightings.

Best Waterholes Near Namutoni

Namutoni is the base for eastern Etosha, with Chudop and Klein Namutoni the most consistently useful stops for giraffe, eland and plains game, and Kalkheuwel a further worthwhile detour to the southwest. Fischer’s Pan comes into its own in the wetter months, when it can hold water and draw birdlife.

Planning Your Waterhole Route

Build your route around your base camp rather than trying to cover the whole park in one drive, and favour a few promising stops over rushing between many. Early morning and late afternoon are the most productive windows. If you’re self-driving, arranging suitable car hire in Namibia in advance makes covering these routes far more comfortable.
