Whether you’re after an exclusive safari lodge with premium amenities, a comfortable mid-range option, or a well-equipped campsite close to the park, the areas surrounding Etosha offer strong choices for every type of traveller. This guide covers lodges and camps near all four main entrance gates, Andersson Gate, Von Lindequist Gate, Galton Gate and King Nehale Gate, plus the private reserves bordering the park’s southwestern boundary.

Why Stay Near Etosha?

Staying just outside the park has real advantages: a wider choice of accommodation styles, from rustic to luxury, more flexibility with check-in and check-out times, and often lower prices than inside-the-park camps. Nearby towns like Outjo, Tsumeb and Kamanjab make it easy to stock up on fuel and supplies before heading to your lodge. Most outside lodges sit within 5 to 35 km of their nearest gate, letting you start game drives early and return at your own pace; see our Etosha planning guide for entrance logistics and fuel stops. Guests staying outside the park still pay entrance fees when entering Etosha, and can either self-drive in with their own vehicle or join a guided game drive from their lodge; see our game viewing tips for self-drivers to make the most of it.

Tips for Choosing Accommodation Outside Etosha

Book early for the July to November high season, when outside lodges fill quickly given their proximity to Etosha’s gates. Consider gate distance: for early morning drives, aim to stay within 10 to 25 km of your chosen gate. Many visitors mix it up, combining one or two nights outside the park with one or two nights inside for both perspectives. Some western and northern lodges may require a 4×4 in the rainy season, so check accessibility ahead of time.
